Agriculture is one of Southwest Florida's legacy industries – a thriving trade that will continue to drive business in the region for decades to come.

For example, Lykes Ranch and A. Duda & Sons - two of the world's leading agricultural companies - own hundreds of thousands of acres in Glades County and are home to cattle, forestry, farming and sugarcane operations.

The University of Florida has a long-standing Agricultural Research Center in Collier County that partners with other state and Federal agencies, as well as private businesses throughout the Southwest Florida region.

An exciting new field of endeavor is Aquaculture, which is a potential remedy for the world's food supply. Serious research is taking place at Mote Aquaculture Research Park in east Sarasota County and at the center's Tropical Research Laboratory in the Florida Keys. A leader in marine research since it was founded in 1955, this independent nonprofit organization is developing new, cost-effective systems to grow marine and freshwater species for food production and stock enhancement using environmentally sound practices.
