Demographics

Southwest Florida has grown significantly over the past few decades, from 3.5% of the state’s population in 1960 to 7.5% in 2000. The Bureau of Economic & Business Research estimates that the region will reach more than 2.3 million residents by 2030. While this trend is similar for the rest of the state, growth in Southwest Florida promises to be more robust, based in part on our quality of place.

Our demographics are very interesting. Retirees (ages 65+) have traditionally relocated to Southwest Florida to enjoy the fantastic climate and lifestyle. This demographic group makes up a large portion of Southwest Florida’s vital intellectual capital, which is spread throughout the five-county region. While this will, no doubt, continue to be the case, the largest share of the current population is between the ages of 35-64. And the fastest growing demographic – the age group that signals positive growth for the Southwest Florida economy – is between the ages of 18-34.

In all, the Southwest Florida region will continue to attract people from all walks of life: students who are drawn to our thriving colleges and universities; families who are seeking new opportunities for their futures; and active adults who want to spend the best years of their lives in the best place on earth. Together, they make this a brighter place to live and to do business.
